Goodbye, Regis!

Publication: Globe
Date: 28 Nov. 2011

The Globe and the low rent Examiner take turns on putting Regis Philbin on their cover and most of the stories have a negative slant.  For example, back last January the Globe said Regis was leaving his show because he was dying.  Now that the show actually is coming to an end, they give him a surprisingly nice farewell.  Here are the headlines.

Regis' revenge!

Publication: Globe
Date: 14 Nov. 2011
The Globe and the low rent Examiner are the only gossip rags who think their readers are interested in what is going on in Regis Philbin's life. The Globe told us he was quitting late last year (true and counts as a scoop) and then that he was dying (so far premature, as many of the tabloid warnings are).  Now they say he is getting his revenge.  Here are the headlines.

Fussin' and Feudin' Alert™: Kathie Lee to replace Regis... and he's furious!

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 3 Oct. 2011

Daytime TV is for an older demographic, and that demographic reads the low rent Examiner. Regis Philbin is leaving his successful show and the rumor is he will be replaced by his former partner Kathie Lee Gifford, a development of which he disapproves. Here are the headlines.
  • She'll RUIN the show, he rages
  • Last Show: Nov. 18, 2011
Other sources confirm the last show's date, but no mention of his replacement has yet been made.

Regis' shocking tell-all book!

Publication: Globe
Date: 25 July 2011

Only the two supermarket rags that have the lion's share of Hey Old Timer Gossip, the Globe and the low rent Examiner, think Regis Phiblin is a source of hot dish. This time it's the Globe who says their is a tell-all book, for which someone will be paid $10 million. It isn't clear on the cover whether he is the author or someone is ratting on him. Here are the headlines.

Regis' cancer returns!

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 30 May 2011

Fresh trash tomorrow! Last trash of the week... right now!

The low rent Examiner gets all dramatic and has a headline about Regis Philbin's cancer returning, and has a picture of him with a dark spot on his face circled for emphasis.

Skin cancer shouldn't be ignored, of course, but if you have good medical coverage, and I'm sure Regis does, this is more of an annoyance than an actual health crisis.

Kathie Lee wants Regis' job!

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 7 March 2011

The low rent Examiner and her sister publication the Globe have been the source of all Regis Philbin stories over the past two years, which fits in nicely with their target demographic of the extremely aged who watch way too much daytime TV. A year ago, before it was clear that Regis would be quitting, the Globe said Pat Sajak wanted Regis' job. Now it's the low rent Examiner's turn, and they say Regis' previous partner Kathie Lee Gifford wants the gig.

And the camera noses in to the tears on his face:Regis quitting over pay cut!

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 14 February 2011

Last week, the Globe said Regis Philbin was quitting because he was dying. Readers voted this the Meanest Story of the Week in a landslide.

This week, the low rent Examiner says he's quitting because he was offered a pay cut. It's still a mean story, but after last week, it can't possibly Meanest Story of the Week now.

Meanest Story nominee:Regis Philbin dying!

Publication: Globe
Date: 7 February 2011

A couple weeks ago, the Globe got their first story right in quite a spell when Regis Philbin announced his retirement about a month after the Globe had said he would retire. Since they are on a roll, the Middle Wicked Step Sister tabloid decided this week to up their bet and tell us Regis, who will turn 80 in August, is dying.

Best wishes to Regis Philbin, his family and friends.

Fussin' and Feudin' Alert™:Kathie Lee rips Regis!

Publication: National Examiner
Date: 17 January 2011

The low rent Examiner tells us Kathie Lee Gifford is angry at Regis Philbin and is quoted as saying "He betrayed me!" This post gets the Hey Old Timer Gossip label because Regis was on the air back in the 1960s before I graduated high school. I would guess some of the Old Timers in the demographic sweet spot of the low rent Examiner are not even clear that Kathie Lee left the show over a decade ago, replaced with a perky blond nearly twenty years her junior.

Hey Old Timer Gossip:Regis quits!

Publication: Globe
Date: 20 December 2010

This was the big story on the cover of the Globe this week, a cover where all five stories had a Hey Old Timer Gossip angle to them. (For those old enough to remember and desperately trying to forget, Regis was sidekick to Joey Bishop during his short-lived disastrous attempt to have a talk show back in the 1960's.)

The Globe says he will quit because of his wife's ultimatum, that there's a shocking secret (isn't there always?) and they know who will replace him.

I could find neither confirmation or denial online, but a lot of celebrities don't even acknowledge the Globe at all.

UPDATE: Regis announces his retirement in 2011 about a month after this is published, so I now have to invent the "Globe confirmed" label.

Fussin' and Feudin' Alert™: Pat Sajak wants Regis Philbin's job

Publication: Globe
Date: 1 Feb. 2010

While some of the media is making a fuss over the Jay vs. Conan kerfuffle, the Globe magazine is giving us the straight poop about the celebrity feud of greatest interest to people who think Steve Allen is still hosting The Tonight Show.

Pat Sajak, that fast rising upstart whose career aspirations know no bounds, has made it known he wants the job of top dog Regis Philbin. Regis, fit and relaxed at 78 years old, is not much interested in handing over the baton to the younger generation, and the 63 year old Sajak will just have to wait his turn.
