Encrypted Google Search

Google was changing the default search engine at least for some users to Google encrypted search. Whenever these users search they are automatically redirected to https://encrypted.google.com instead of the standard Google search address. Encrypted search, often referred to as Google SSL, improves the protection against some attack forms that spy on a computer’s traffic. SSL search is only enabled on some Google properties. Google images and Google Maps for instance are available over SSL currently.

Evolution of Google Homepage [1997 - 2009]

In 1997 to early 1998, Google was still available at google.stanford.edu. The Beta sign wasn’t yet live.

In 1998, Google was almost cluttered. Back then there was still some emphasis on “Stanford Search,” showing the roots of where Google comes from. Also, right on the front-page you could subscribe to the now extinct Google Friends newsletter. And of course, Google – with the not so pretty logo co-founder Sergey made in GIMP – was still in Beta...

Microsoft office vs Google Docs

Microsoft is testing a new version of its market-leading productivity suite for Windows PCs that will tie-up with new Web-based Office. The applications offered by Microsoft will be similar to those offered by Google including a suite of lightweight online applications.
Google’s online spreadsheet and office related applications has been gaining popularity. To counter that Microsoft plans to take Office online, with a new series of free Office Web applications.

“Office Web Applications, the online companion to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications will allow you to access documents from anywhere. You can even simultaneously share and work on documents with others online,” says Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview Website.

Google celebrating 12th birthday

Today (27.09.2010), search engine giant, Google celebrated its 12th birthday with Google Doodle. The California based company was first incorporated as a privately held corporation on Sep 27th, 1998.This Google Doodle is a painting of a cake, which was designed by 88-years-old, Los Angeles artist Wayne Thiebaud. In the Google’s birthday doodle, there is a candle which represents the letter ‘L’ in the word Google.

Happy Birthday Google

Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin named the search engine they built 'Google', a play on the word 'googol', the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name signifies the huge volume of information that Google stores. Google's mission is to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Founded in 1998 by Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google today runs over one million servers in data centers around the world, and processes over one billion search requests every day.

Google TV beta Coming Soon

In 2007, Mark Erickson with "Infinite Solutions" promised users a way to access Google TV Beta.

The Google TV Beta description reads: "Google Labs is at it again! Be one of the first to try out GoogleTV! This is Mark Erickson on Infinite Solutions. In this episode, I'll show you how to access Google's secret on-demand television service."

In response to the videos, Google told Blogoscope in a statement:
Mark Erickson's "Infinite Solutions" segment highlights Gmail's seemingly "infinite" powers – from gobs of storage and lightning fast search to some of the best anti-spam action in the business (and how about that sweet Easter Egg cowbell in Gmail Chat?). Alas, Mark's "Google TV beta" is simply a figment of his fertile imagination. But great entertainment for all of us here at the Googleplex.

But just over three years later, Google TV isn't a hoax–it's actually here.Google unveiled its new 'Google TV' platform earlier today at the Google I/O developer conference, touting the technology as one that would "change the future of television."Google TV aims to "unite Web surfing with channel surfing on televisions," the Associated Press explains. Read more about the new platform here (but don't believe what Erickson has to tell you about how you can get Google TV Beta.)

Google Squared News

A trend with search engines is displaying search results in different ways such as with images rather than just text, However, when a search engine starts packing results with too many options it can decrease the effectiveness of getting to results you want quickly. Few people would argue that Google.com doesn’t already provide a great search experience,Google Squared, launched in June 2009 is potentially a way to improve search results by collecting facts from the web and presenting them in an organized collection, similar to a spreadsheet.  What I predict is Google will continue to leverage lessons learned from Google Squared to test out enhancements to Google.com results.
